Quick answer

PEMDAS is a memory aid for evaluating expressions consistently. Multiplication and division share a level, as do addition and subtraction.

Follow the correct groups

Work through parentheses, exponents, multiplication/division from left to right, then addition/subtraction from left to right.

Do not always multiply before dividing

For 12 ÷ 3 × 2, go left to right: 12 ÷ 3 = 4, then 4 × 2 = 8.

Parentheses change the result

2 + 3 × 4 = 14, but (2 + 3) × 4 = 20. Grouping matters.

Worked examples

  • 6 + 2 × 5 = 16
  • (6 + 2) × 5 = 40
  • 18 ÷ 3 × 2 = 12

Common mistake to avoid

PEMDAS does not say addition always happens before subtraction. They are equal priority.
