Quick answer

A fraction represents part of a whole or a division. The top number is the numerator; the bottom number is the denominator.

Read a fraction

In 3/4, the numerator is 3 and the denominator is 4. Think of three equal parts out of four.

Find equivalent fractions

Multiplying numerator and denominator by the same nonzero number preserves value: 1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6.

Compare simple fractions

With the same denominator, compare numerators. With different denominators, rewrite using a common denominator.

Worked examples

  • 1/2 = 2/4
  • 3/8 < 5/8
  • 1/3 = 2/6

Common mistake to avoid

The denominator cannot be zero, and larger denominators do not automatically mean larger fractions.
